This (sort of) monologue play was first performed by the playwright himself at the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe and has been produced all over the world since.

“She is three-dimensional. And I’d love to see you play three-dimensional again…”

It presents James (a film producer) who needs to coax Olivia (an upcoming starlet) into starring in his post 9/11 love story if it is ever to go ahead. He just hopes his script’s tale of suicide bombers and Versace suits will have enough bite to get her on board.

“Ravenhill’s brilliantly poisonous satire is up to date, demonstrating a mastery of slick cultural references and the flaky-glamorous language of product placement” – Sunday Times

Running Time: 50 mins

Credits:

James – Ben Plunkett Reynolds
Olivia – Moira Mager

Directed by Kellie Marie Reynolds

“YOU! ARE! A! TOYYYYY! You aren’t the real Buzz Lightyear! You’re – you’re an action figure! You are a child’s play thing!”

“…you are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity.”
~ Woody + Buzz, Toy Story

The first stories we tell; we tell them with our toys. They’re our first link to the boundless, wonderful world of fiction. Like avatars for our imagination, they bring us into their world and let us populate it with our dreams.

Milk and Cookie Stories is for anyone who has a story to tell, or wants to hear a tale told well, in a relaxed, friendly environment – a place with tea, cushions, cookies and friends. Our event is free, everyone is welcome and we welcome stories of all kinds.

This month we’re looking for toy stories. Like about the time you lost your family at an airport because you were too busy playing with your Talkboy. Or the time you inexplicably lost your two favourite toys right before moving day, only to have them both mysteriously turn up at the top of the box right next to you in the car. Or that time you finally gave an eternally curious public a brief but comprehensive look into your psyche with your final word, about your beloved childhood sled.

But of course our theme is just a guideline, and we welcome stories of all kinds. About toys. And personality-shaping childhood traumas.

As always, we’ll be having our awesome Bake-Off where we take your finest treats and have them battle for King of the Cookie so don’t forget to bring your champion confection! Special prize for anyone who can make a treat that’s also a toy! The winner will receive a lovely prize as well as a round of applause from our eternally comely audience.

Extra points to anyone who brings their toy along for a bit of show and tell!

“I think all toys should be invisible. Not only would they improve children’s imaginations, but they’d also be really affordable.
~ Jarod Kintz

“LOVE MY HEART”

February 14th 2013 7-9pm

Butoh dance workshop with performance

This monthly series of workshops with performance are aimed at developing an appreciation and an understanding of what Butoh dance practice consists of. This innovative and exciting format, sees Ambra facilitate a 1.30 mins workshop followed by a performance. This gives a change to have first hand experience of what the butoh process is about and appreciate it within a performance which will vary every month.

Ambra Bergamasco current research in Butoh explores themes of vulnerability
and rawness, belonging and metamorphosis, and scapes of emotional evocation.

Ambra has been practicing Butoh dance over 15 years, training with a number
of Butoh Dancers, both Japanese and Europeans. Most recently with Katirn Neue
(director) she was co-director and performer of the Butoh Dublin Festival. Born
in a contemporary research theatre company, Ambra was exposed to Eugenio
Barda and Grotowski theatre practices amongst the many, and further worked
and trained with Peter Brook actors as Mamadou Dioume and Mallika Sarabhai
with whom she worked and toured both in India and Italy.

Butoh dance practice

The dance of Japanese origin, founded by Hijikata Tatsumi and Ohno Kazuo (and
Ohno Kazuo’s son Yoshito being a dancer in the first butoh performance Kinjiki
/ Forbidden Colours) in the late 1950′s as a rebellion against established Japanese
art and under the influence of the cruelty of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, is
based on images and personal experiences rather than formalised shapes. ‘Against
a complex historical and socio-cultural background, but? evolved in a catalytic
atmosphere: anti-American protests and experiments of the avant-garde
alternated with intercultural inspirations – e.g. existentialism, Ausdruckstanz,
and intracultural innovations – e.g. reritualizations of Japanese dance and theatre
traditions’ (extract from Dr.Michael Weiss). Butoh is mindfulness, it is “in every
day’s life” (Yoshito Ohno).

A Project by the participants of EVE Tuiscint a centre for
individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome

Inside the box is a project exploring the idea of self-portraits. The room is full
of white boxes – all identical on the outside. Internally each box encapsulates
the individual passions, hopes and dreams, of its creator. How much do our
preferences reveal about our essence? Is it possible to share ourselves through
our choice and arrangement of personal odds and ornaments? What defines
oneself? Is that possible? Seemingly, there are more questions than answers.
Look for yourself, please, look inside the box…And see.

Grand Opening 22nd January 2013 at 2.00pm
Exchange Gallery – Exchange Street Upper Temple Bar
Dublin 2
Exhibition open from 15/1 – 31/1/2013
Open Every Day

Quotes from some participants:

“To me what the box represents is our physical bodies and brains and
consciousness and thoughts and emotions and things that makes us happy and
things that makes us sad and all of that and to me outside of box is the physical
world and spiritual world which we live in. The box is a metaphor for ourselves
and the gallery could mean the rest of the world at large”

“I view the work of art as my place in the world and myself as well.”

“I am in metaphorical sense a box on the planet overrun with other boxes, we all
have one basic design – we all have two arms, two legs and head … and torso
… and we all – basically – look the same, but on the inside there is an infinite
amount of difference. You could go through your life looking at these same boxes
and just pass them by, paying no attention, saying they are all the same as
everyone else, but if you actually stop and look at the box and open it and see
what is inside, you may be surprised.”

“The box represents for me an insight into an inner me …”

“I am a new age Pandora!”
